I’m a UI/UX designer with a background in mechanical engineering, and I often utilize my experience solving complex problems to craft memorable experiences. I believe that accessibility and usability are paramount in design, and I want to work on a diverse and user-centered design team to create enjoyable experiences for all people.

My Background

I’m a first generation Nigerian-American and, fun fact, I’m a member of the Yoruba tribe. In my culture, names have powerful meanings and my first name means “I am worthy to give praise.” If you’re unsure how to pronounce it, no worries, I’ll teach you! This is how my name is pronounced:

Opeyemi (ah-peh-yeh-mee) Odejimi (ah-deh-jih-mee)

Pivoting from Engineering to Design

When I started college, I chose to pursue engineering because I wanted my work to have a tangible and positive impact on others. I’ve worked on a variety of projects and teams in multiple industries, and I’ve had an absolute blast! But I’ve always been an artistic person, and in the summer of 2020, I decided that I also wanted to pursue a discipline that would allow me to utilize and hone my visual creativity.

Not long after this, I discovered UI/UX design and it felt like a door to a whole new world had opened up. I’ve completed a UI/UX Design bootcamp and completed multiple design projects. I’ve also been able to add a plethora of new skills to my tool belt and am always researching design trends and techniques.

I do have to admit that I’m a bit obsessed with my work. The quality of my designs convey my passion and skill, so every detail has to be just right. When you look at my work, you see me, and this motivates me to be the best designer I can be. I’ve grown so much both professionally and personally since choosing to pursue design and I’m incredibly excited for my future as a designer 😊

My Values

Be Open to Learning

I’m a huge believer that there’s something to be learned in every role and from every experience. I’m a lifelong learner and willing to admit when I don’t know something -because of this, I’ve developed a broad a set of technical and interpersonal skills that have made me a better designer.

Everyone/role Matters

Regardless of your title, age, or level of experience, every position in an organization matters. We all work together to achieve the impossible and create high-quality products as a team, and we all deserve to feel seen, heard, and respected.

Always Ask Why

“Why are we doing this? Why do we use these tools, systems, and processes? Why don’t we solve this problem this way?”

I’ve learned that if you never ask yourself “why” when approaching a problem, you’ll miss out on opportunities to discover more efficient, unique, and effective solutions than the ones you currently have. Questioning the status quo challenges you to think outside of the box and creates room for innovation.
